It has been a great 4 days here in Boston with lots of friends and family. I hadn’t seen Kelly in 6 weeks and although I had dinner with Claire and her friends in Maine last week, it was fun to spend several days together and I look forward to riding with her in July. On top
of that, we met up with Janet and her husband, Todd - another Rice alum - for dinner and had dinner last night with yet another Rice friend, Bob McGaughey, and his wife Melissa.
I’ve been to Boston many times over the years and each time I enjoy it a bit more than the last. Everyone knows someone from Boston. NYC might be the place everyone wants to go - Wall Street, Broadway, etc., People go to prove themselves in NYC. If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. But I think Boston is where they want to be. Boston feels more well-rounded, a better work-life balance. People outside doing things. Yes, it was a holiday weekend with absolutely perfect weather. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a college town. I spent a lot of time in Cambridge - home of Harvard and MIT - trying to absorb just a small shred of the overwhelming brilliance of everyone around me. I don’t think it worked but it was worth the shot. In addition to those two schools, Boston U, Boston College, Northeastern and Tufts are all here, in addition to probably 8 or 10 other smaller schools.
There are two major downsides to Boston. Dunkin Donuts runs this town. There’s one every block downtown. Those are hard to avoid, but can be done with some effort and dedication. The second - and they share this with NYC - is the absolute obnoxiousness of the Boston sports fans. This is unavoidable, although I must confess that my first trip to Fenway Park was very pleasant other than the final score. Boston beat the Orioles 12-2. Turns out we just went the wrong day, as the O’s got them back 10-0 the next day.
I wasn’t totally idle for the last few day, logging about 8-9 miles walking each of the last couple days. But the riding begins again tomorrow. Rhode Island and Connecticut before a bit more time in western Mass and across New York. There’s 19 more days until the halftime intermission in Indianapolis.
Jealous of this guy. He’s got the perfect name and even spells it right
Pretty much a sold out stadium to watch two of the worst teams in the American League. They may be obnoxious, but they do love their sports.
Even convinced these two lovelies to go to the game with me
After the game, we met Todd (far left) and Janet (middle) for dinner in Cambridge.
The view toward downtown from The Boston U bridge over the Charles River. Tons of boats on the river all weekend. Mostly kayaks and sailboats.
Great lobster roll at Legal Seafood.
