Little Rhody

I know I made lots of “small” jokes when I was riding through Delaware, and they were well-earned, but Rhode Island is in a whole different league. If you don’t go to Providence, which I didn’t, it is not easy to find a place to stay. If you pass up a motel, the odds of finding another one before you get to Connecticut are about zero. That’s how I ended up at the Woonsocket Motor Inn.

This place is only about a mile over the border from Massachusetts, but I didn’t want to ride past it in case there wasn’t another one. I got a nice, non-smoking room only to find out what they really mean is that I can’t smoke in it, but everyone that’s been in this room in the past 60 years could. The ruckus in the hall has calmed down a bit now, but there was a point when I turned the volume off the TV and pretended there was no one in here in hopes no one would knock on my door.

To be sure, there is a lot of money in Rhode Island. Newport is one of the wealthiest towns in the country, with yachts bigger than most houses and houses so big, they barely fit in this state. It’s just that none of that money seems to have made it the entire 40 mile length of the state up here to Woonsocket. When the dust settled (literally) in the hallway, I ventured out to find some dinner. I’m not much of a sci-fi or horror movie fan, but when I went outside, I felt like I was in the Night of the Living Dead or the Zombie Apocalypse. There were random people wandering slowly in every direction - across parking lots, down the sidewalks, down the streets. A couple were carrying brown paper bags. I didn’t get close enough to count teeth. It had a different feel, though, than my other “Reacher” town stay in Galena, Kansas. The similarity is that it feels like a town I should leave early tomorrow morning. It’s about 20 miles to get all the way across the state from here. I plan to do that quickly.

A salted toffee donut. Possibly the best donut I’ve ever had. This place also had an everything bagel donut, except when I got one the first time I went to this shop, I didn’t realize it was a donut! It was definitely the best savory donut I’ve ever had, complete with a little cream cheese filling.

There are 7 locations in the Boston area. Don’t miss it, but get there early or they’ll run out.

There’s a joke in here somewhere…

A cult classic in the Scott household. I didn’t go in in case someone inside had Stick-it-to-the-maneosis.

Hopefully I find the sign that says Leaving Woonsocket pretty quickly tomorrow morning.
