Roll Me Away

Jon Scott

“Roll, roll me away

I'm gonna roll me away tonight

Gotta keep rollin'

Gotta keep ridin'

Keep searchin' 'til I find what's right

And as the sunset faded I spoke

To the faintest first starlight

And I said next time

Next time

We'll get it right” - Bob Seger

As Dan and I were driving back yesterday to his house In Illinois, we were listening to my playlist and some Bob Seger came on. We started talking about this song and it seemed appropriate to describe what we’ve been doing, perhaps not with quite the same angst that Mr. Seger seems to have.

We left our Route 66 journey about 60 miles short of our intended destination of Amarillo. By virtue of making that very wise decision, we got back to Springfield last evening, giving us the entire day today with nothing planned. So what did we do? We got on our bikes and went for a little ride! I would describe our ride today as the biking equivalent of a leisurely stroll, compared to where we’ve been. We covered about 34, mostly flat miles. The cold has followed us here but the wind, at least in its worst form, did not. It’s central Illinois, so there was some breeze, but it only served to make us colder, not threaten to stop us in our tracks. Near the end of the ride we stopped for lunch at Tacology for some delicious tacos - what else?

We will resurrect this ride some time next year with a goal of getting to Flagstaff. We might just resurrect this blog a time or two before then to shout out a few people that have been there for me on my travels over the past couple years.

Thanks goodness they marked the Lindbergh site as private property. That exciting story would have swarms descend if it were open to the public.
